Position Overview
We are currently seeking a dedicated Operator (Melthouse) to join our team on a permanent, full-time basis. The primary purpose of this role is to ensure consistent, high-quality, and timely sampling of both customer and internal materials handled within the Melthouse Department. You will work under the supervision of the Senior Operator to ensure that all processes are executed in compliance with standard operating procedures, safety regulations, and company guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
As a Melthouse Operator, you will have the following responsibilities. Please note that these are not exhaustive and are subject to change in line with operational requirements:
Daily Preparation of Moulds – Responsible for preparing moulds used in pouring and tipping processes to ensure efficient, safe, and consistent production.
Assisting with Sludge Melting – Work under the direct supervision of the Senior Operator to assist with melting sludge deposits. This involves closely following procedures to ensure accurate and safe melting operations.
Charging, Sampling, and Pouring of Bullion Deposits – Assist in charging furnaces, sampling materials, and pouring bullion deposits while adhering to safety protocols and quality standards. The Senior Operator will oversee these tasks to ensure compliance.
Weighing of Incoming Material – Accurately weigh all incoming materials using calibrated scales to ensure precision. You will work under the supervision of the Senior Operator to ensure that the scales remain balanced and reliable throughout the process.
Material Mass Discrepancies – Identify and report any mass discrepancies in the incoming material, keeping accurate records for reporting purposes. Operating Induction Furnaces – Operate induction furnaces according to the size of the deposit, adhering to standard operating procedures. This includes selecting the appropriate furnace and ensuring optimal conditions for the melt.
Pouring Molten Metal into Moulds – Safely pour molten metal into pre-prepared moulds without causing spillage. The accurate and efficient pouring of molten metal is essential for maintaining product quality and safety.
Cleaning of Slag and Accurate Accounting for Metal – Clean slag from ingots to ensure proper accounting of metal during the weight-after-melt process. This involves scrupulous attention to detail and adherence to internal processes to avoid losses or inaccuracies.
Health, Safety, and Compliance – Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations, ensuring that any potential risks are addressed proactively. This includes taking steps to rectify safety concerns that may pose a risk to yourself or others within the workplace. The role requires the ability to lift heavy gold bars and work safely in a highly regulated environment.
Shift Work and Physical Requirements – Be prepared to work shifts and handle physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials such as gold bars. The role requires physical fitness and stamina to meet these operational needs.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the role of Operator (Melthouse), you must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Education: A completed Matric qualification is essential.
- Experience: At least 1 year of experience working in a similar environment, preferably in an industrial or refinery setting.
Skills and Competencies
To succeed in this role, you should possess the following skills and competencies:
Technical Competence: Familiarity with the operation of induction furnaces and similar machinery in a refinery or industrial setting. Ability to work with molten metals and follow strict safety protocols.
Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail is essential when handling precious metals and adhering to safety standards. Physical Strength and Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials such as gold bars and withstand the physical demands of working in a high-temperature environment.
Computer Proficiency: Basic computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook), are essential for record-keeping and communication purposes.
Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other departments.
Communication and Comprehension: The ability to follow verbal and written instructions is crucial in ensuring that all tasks are performed according to guidelines and procedures. This includes understanding complex safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
