SARAO Undergraduate Scholarships for 2024: Promoting Excellence in Engineering and Science Education
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is pleased to announce its Undergraduate Scholarships for the year 2024, aimed at supporting South African citizens and permanent residents who are passionate about pursuing degrees in Engineering and Science fields. SARAO recognizes the significance of nurturing young minds in these domains and encourages applications from motivated individuals.

Applicants are advised to be mindful of the internal closing dates set by their respective universities. To ensure a smooth application process, please verify the specific closing date at the university where you intend to register for your undergraduate studies and submit your application by that date.
Eligibility Criteria
SARAO welcomes applications from candidates who meet the following criteria:
South African citizens or permanent residents. Attained a minimum of 70% in Mathematics in Grade 12 OR achieved a minimum grade-point average of 65% at the undergraduate level. Pursuing or planning to pursue any of the specified degrees:

- Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
- Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering
- Bachelor of Computer Engineering
- Bachelor of Science in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics and Physics
- Bachelor of Science in Physics and Electronics
- Bachelor of Science in Astronomy / Astrophysics and Physics
- Bachelor of Computer Science, with co-major in Mathematics / Applied Mathematics
- Bachelor of Science in Physics and Electronics / Astrophysics / Computer Science
Funding and Support
Selected applicants will receive a SARAO Undergraduate Scholarship for a duration of up to four years for Engineering degrees or three years for Science degrees. This support is designed to cover the full duration of studies, ensuring the successful completion of a BEng or BSc degree within the specified timeframe.
For the 2024 academic year, the scholarship amount is set at R168,000. Additionally, scholarship recipients are eligible for a one-time laptop grant of R12,000.
Conditions and Expectations
Recipients of the SARAO Undergraduate Scholarship are required to adhere to the following conditions:
Maintain a minimum average of 65% in mid-year and year-end results to qualify for annual renewal. Inform SARAO of any supplementary grants received, not exceeding 50% of the SARAO scholarship amount.
Seek approval from SARAO before making changes to field of study or university. Submit a copy of the awarded degree to SARAO upon completion of studies. Outstanding students achieving two or more distinctions in mid-year exams may be invited to a postgraduate scholarship conference.
Application Process
Submit your application electronically through NRF Connect: https://nrfconnect.nrf.ac.za, following your university’s internal closing date. Include a comprehensive motivation/biography (minimum 1000 words) detailing academic achievements, reasons for selecting the chosen degree, research and career aspirations, and justification for deserving the scholarship.
Attach two letters of reference, with at least one from an academic source (lecturer/teacher). Accept the conditions of the scholarship grant, as outlined in Section 4. applications must be submitted on time and are complete.
Notification and Contact
Successful applicants will be notified by 10 December 2023. In the event that you do not receive communication from SARAO by this date, please assume that your application was not successful. SARAO retains the right to accept or reject applications at its discretion.
