Intrepid Travel is recruiting crew during October, with training scheduled to begin in early 2027. Applicants should note that this is a freelance contract opportunity rather than a conventional permanent position.
Purpose of the Position
The main responsibility of the Driver is to provide safe and reliable transportation for travelers throughout their journeys. The successful candidate must ensure that passengers reach their destinations safely, follow planned routes and experience professional service throughout the trip. Drivers are also expected to assist travelers when entering or exiting vehicles where necessary. As representatives of Intrepid Travel, they must maintain a professional attitude and demonstrate excellent customer service when interacting with passengers.
Vehicle safety and cleanliness are essential parts of the position. Drivers must keep assigned vehicles clean, prevent avoidable damage and check that vehicles are in a suitable condition for driving. Following traffic laws, observing schedules and using defensive driving techniques will help ensure a comfortable and secure experience for customers.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants interested in the Intrepid Travel Driver position should meet the following requirements:
Valid Driving License: Candidates must hold a valid Code 10 driving license and a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP). Applicants should also have a good driving record. Matric Certificate: A Grade 12 certificate or an equivalent qualification is required. English and Mathematics must have been taken as subjects. Defensive Driving Skills: Applicants must demonstrate safe driving practices, understand road safety and be able to respond appropriately to changing traffic and road conditions.
English Communication: Candidates must be able to read, write, understand and communicate clearly in English. These skills are important when assisting travelers, communicating instructions and responding to customer questions. Physical Fitness: Applicants must be capable of frequently lifting items weighing up to 45 kilograms. The role may also involve considerable walking and other physical activities. Reliability and Motivation: The ideal candidate should be dependable, self-motivated and committed to completing assigned responsibilities professionally.
Leadership Ability: Applicants should demonstrate leadership skills, particularly when assigned Team Leader responsibilities during on-call duties. 1. Transport Travellers Safely
Drive travellers to and from designated destinations while following approved routes and schedules. Observe traffic regulations and apply defensive driving techniques to reduce risks and maintain passenger safety.
2. Maintain Vehicle Safety
Check that the assigned vehicle is safe and suitable for use. Identify potential problems, take appropriate action in line with company procedures and help prevent avoidable damage through responsible vehicle handling.
3. Keep Vehicles Clean
Maintain a clean and presentable vehicle throughout the trip. Regularly check the vehicle’s condition and ensure that it provides a suitable environment for passengers.
4. Assist Passengers
Help travellers enter and exit vehicles when required. Communicate politely, respond professionally to customer needs and contribute to a welcoming travel experience.
5. Follow Travel Schedules
Work according to planned itineraries and agreed schedules while maintaining safe driving practices. Drivers must balance punctuality with responsible driving and compliance with road regulations.
6. Represent Intrepid Travel
Act as a professional ambassador for the company by demonstrating its values and maintaining positive relationships with customers. Drivers should show respect for travellers from different backgrounds and contribute to an inclusive environment.
7. Support Team Operations
Work collaboratively with other crew members and demonstrate leadership when assigned additional responsibilities. Flexibility and effective communication are important when responding to changing travel requirements.
Working Conditions and Availability
This freelance contract offers flexibility in when and how individuals work. However, applicants must have strong availability during peak travel seasons, particularly from June to October. The position may involve extended working hours, substantial walking, regular interaction with travelers and demanding travel schedules. Candidates must be physically and mentally prepared for these responsibilities. Drivers should also be willing to travel extensively and spend time away from home. Some tours may last up to four weeks, and assignments can involve destinations across Southern Africa and beyond.
